Truism: It's very hard to get anywhere if you don't know where you're going.
'Vision mapping' is the process of really breaking down what you want your destination to look like. What are you aiming for with your music and why do you want it? What part do you want it to play in your life? What do you want your income to be and what income streams do you need to achieve it?
These questions and many more will challenge you to really focus on your vision.
Outcome: You will end this session with a vision map canvas that will help you to visualise why you're doing this, what your destination looks like so you know when you're there, and provides you with a place to update and adapt as your progress impacts your vision.
Truism: You are a human being, not a human doing
No. We're not going to spend this session gazing out the window for 90-minutes. Day Dreaming in this sense is about really focusing hard on what you want your days to look like. While understanding your vision is key to knowing where you're going, planning how you want to spend your days is about enjoying your journey so it's easier for you to keep going when things get tough.
Outcome: You will create a week-planner that outlines how you want to spend your days. Chances are that this will be an aspirational plan to begin with but over time you will works towards transitioning from your current reality to your day dream.
Truism: Every artist has their own unique story
Unfortunately for most artists, their story is either boring & unoriginal or else it's not being told very well. Most people in the music industry use the terms an artists 'narrative' or 'story' to mean whatever they want it to mean in any given context. But most artists don't give enough consideration to it & don't own the narrative that's developing with them.
Story Crafting is about addressing the narrative head on & developing a deeper understanding of your values & purpose as an artist. Why should anyone listen to you & your music? And how are you going to make sure that anyone reading your latest press release or biog is going to care enough to give you a chance?
Outcome: You will create a biog that engages the reader, a press release that gets the feature & all the variations you need including one-liner bio's for all digital platforms. (Think "hillbilly flamenco")
Truism: Goals are dreams with deadlines
What are the key moments gonna be on your journey? What do you want to achieve? Where do you want to be in 12-months, 3-years, 10-years time?
All not easy questions to answer but powerful to commit to paper.
Who do you want to review your music? Which DJ's do you want to play your tracks? Who do you want to release your music?
Perhaps slightly easier than the previous questions but still hugely valuable to figure out and commit to.
Goals are difficult to achieve. If they were easy then everybody would be achieving them. The point is, it's not supposed to be easy. The thing about goals is that they are supposed to challenge you.
Outcome: You'll write SMART goals to keep you on track & milestones so you know how well you're doing.
Truism: There's an art to deconstruction
There's no denying that your journey will be unique. There is no 'one-size-fits-all' route to success in music. But once you understand your goals, it's worth spending some time deconstructing the journeys that other similar artists have taken to achieve them. This will help you create the actions required to formulate the plan you'll make to progress towards your goals.
Outcome: You will break your goals down into action steps which will form your plan based on the journeys taken by similar artists.
Truism: There is no movement without rhythm
Embedding daily rituals & rhythms will enable you to consistently take the action required to move you towards your goals. This is about experimenting with how you structure your day to allow for the best physical & mental health while balancing productivity & creative output.
Outcome: You will determine the rhythms & rituals required for you to do your best work. You will create a plan that will allow you to test the most productive structure for you & your creative output. This will form the habits you need to embed regularly into your day-to-day life.
